Welcome to London

Welcome to the United Kingdom, welcome to London and welcome to the greatest city in the world.  It’s a subjective view of course but even if you don’t agree, there really aren’t that many other competitors.  New York?  Perhaps, but all things being equal, it just doesn’t have the history.  Paris?  It has the history but its relatively small size precludes it from the main stage.   Rome has the history but has fallen by the wayside as an economic power.

Things may change in the future as the mega-cities of Beijing, Tokyo and Seoul emerge to drag Asia to the forefront of global attention.  Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata may also be in line.  How about Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City or Sau Paulo?  Again, these are cities for the future.  London is here now and we are here to provide a beginners insight into why this is the city of cities.

“As I came down the Highgate Hill, The Highgate Hill, the Highgate Hill, As I came down the Highgate Hill I met the sun’s bravado, And saw below me, fold on fold, Grey to pearl and pearl to gold, This London like a land of old, The land of Eldorado.”

The words above were penned by Henry Howarth Bashford in 1917 in Romances and are quite possibly one of the most oft-quoted lines regarding the city of London.  London lends itself to literary and poetic quotes unlike any other city and the Victorian and Edwardian writers were masters of their art.

In this site we will look at London’s history and growth as the capital and what drives its economy today.  How can it be such a globally influential city in a country of just 60 million people?  We’ll check out the sites and attractions and some of the lesser known destinations frequented by those that make this city their home.  Check back regularly for updates.
